How to Buy a Kayak

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: Recreational Kayaks, Storage, Straight Line — @ 2:03 pm
Jason Kay asked:

So, the great outdoors is calling your name and for some strange reason your name now begins with Kayak. Well, Kayak Joe, it’s time to go looking for a Kayak but you have no idea what to look for in a Kayak or even what the differences are between Kayaks. Herein we shall discuss what you need to look for in a Kayak.

But first, what kind of Kayaking will you do? There’s a Kayak for every occasion and you need to know which one you need and what to look for in your Kayak. Here are the different types and what to look for:

1)Recreational Kayaks: These are your all round, can be used for just about anything Kayak and a great style for a beginner. These are used for mild river trips and casual use in ponds and bays. They are generally wider and shorter than other Kayaks, which make them easier to handle and turn.
2)Touring Kayak: These are designed for extended wilderness travel. These types are very long and have a good deal of area for storage of supplies needed on a long trip. These track well, or move in a straight line, but because of their extended length, are harder to turn. There are versions made for just day touring and these have less space but are made of lighter materials for better handling.

3)Whitewater Kayaks: This is what most people think of when they think Kayak. Tearing down some rapids, water splashing everywhere and a lot of speed and danger. These are shorter to increase the maneuverability of the Kayak around rocks and in fast moving water. They may have rounded bottoms and more upturned ends to deal with the waves. They are hard to paddle in a straight line and are not recommended for casual Kayaking.

4)Downriver Kayaks: These are specially designed to travel quickly and smoothly through the water. These are normally used for racing as they are very long and narrow which makes them tipsy and not very much suited for a novice Kayaker. They are very long and straight, which makes them go in a straight line easily; however, turning is more difficult.

When you buy a Kayak, you must consider how you will use it. If you are going for easy little day trips in a calm river or braving the roar of the rapids. You will also need to consider if you will be turning a lot, how fast you need the boat to be and the boats volume. The Volume relates to how much stuff you can store in your Kayak when you take it out. The more stuff you need to bring, the more volume it needs.

Lastly, the shape of the boat is important to consider. You will want to talk to your Kayak retailer and them know exactly how you intend to use your Kayak and how skilled you are. You will also need to get gear for yourself including a helmet, lifejacket, clothing, first aid gear and waterproof bags for any electronic devices you may need.

why is my turtle water turn white?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Tags: Clean Water, Ph Tests, Turtle — @ 11:37 am November 27, 2008
xxmusicgrl16xx asked:

i have two red eayed sliders, and i have enjoyed them ever since i got them. they have a nice tank for their size (not very big) and have plenty of room to swim around in. i have noticed, lately, that the water turns white and slowly turns green and becomes very stinky and thick. i change the water not even every 5 days it gets so bad so fast.

what’s really odd is that when i take my tank to my friends house the water is crystal clear and perfect, and i could not clean the water fo another week. i take it home, clean it, and it’s white again!

i’ve done pH tests and they are fine. do you think it could be my filter or maybe the water? would a new filter help? i really need help…
